Is a WJ 4.7 rebuild worth it?
Hey guys. Over the weekend I discovered that the wife's WJ was low on oil. And by low, I mean I put in 5 qts. Doesn't really matter how it happened, but that it did. There is a pretty loud rod-knock now, and I am sure some other damage.
I am trying to decide on the route to take it. It currently has 170k on it. Body is in pretty good shape. Freshly rebuilt front diff, trans and transfer have had fluid changes and are in good working order. Also has new Rancho shocks, and a front axle.
My options I see it are:
1. Sell it with the rod knock. Maybe get 2400 for it.
2. Buy a used/rebuilt motor for it. Those I see have been going for as much as 1600 for a motor with 180k on it, and a rebuilt one is in the 2500 area.
3. Have some one rebuild the motor that is in it.
What do you guys think? How much do you think it would cost to have the current motor rebuilt (if the damage isn't to extensive.) I have my eye on a couple of other WJs on CL for a good price. My first notion is to sell this one, and get what I can for it, and buy another one.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
oneunder, Buy the already rebuilt 4.7L. I put 230,000 miles on my '99 WJ Quadra Drive Limited before I destroyed the body in a rollover. The transmission and transfer case and differetials operated like new till 230K. I was running synthetics till 150K. The engine burned about one quart every 2500 miles from 150K to 230K. It's about the time for an oil change with regular oil in engine anyway. Good Luck.
