I went to the pull a part in norcross today and saw a 242 and 231 in a cherokee but they were both missing the tail cone (both were internal slip yoke)

Srry i didnt mean to sound crude, just its in the eye of the beholder and wallet, lol. Np 242 is stronger supposedly, but has the awd option which is clutches and what not, which can where and be hard to get out sometimes. I had that problem, but the big reason i didnt want a 242 is the only option of locker for the front and rear is a selectable locker. Cause if u put a lunchbox/detroit in the axles, u select awd and u would burn the clutch up in a hurry. So then u be better off np231 same tcase less options, so less to wrong. But if u plan on never puttin a locker in ur rig or puttin high dollar selrctables, a 242 is the better option because awd is handy when icy or snowy, ect.

noooo!!! the more you know... ya know! lol.... i originally wanted a 231, but after seeing the 242 i debated doing that.... now after you talking about it not liking lockers... id much rather have the 231!! cause i will do the locker(s) here in the next few months, less can be more some times

thanks for the info

Chris

its damn near impossible to insult me over the interwebz.... so no insult taken! and you didnt sound crude either...

Yea i think how they numbered em is the first # is series which jeep is 2. Second # is stregnth which is 3 for 231 and for 4 for 242. So 242 is stronger. But the last,# is the selection 1 is 2hi, 4hi, 4lo. 2 is 2 fulltime, 4 part time, 4 full tine, 4 lo. But another reason 231 is popular because of after market SYE options. With 231 u have complete output shaft option replacement for cheap. But the 242 only has hack-n-tap or really rare and expensive output shaft replacement kit. But once u put lunchbox or detroit locker in yer rig, just dont use the 4 full time option, u would have a strong expensive tcase, thats handicapped. Its up to the user, i just think the 231 is more accepted tcase of the 4x4 community and the 242 is more economical for the streets.

So it was just a ZJ with spacers in it? Or was it a 2" coil lift? I wouldn't mind a gas tank skid but I'm more interested in tow hooks. Do you see any of those?

if you have a trailer hitch the rear hook wont work unless modded.... i pulled my rear hook and installed a trailer hitch instead... can go get a plug with D ring attachment for a rear tow point....
