Jk Hurrican Creek Road off (I-40)

I'm new to the forum and have done some trail riding in the U.P last summer (low maintenance roads and old logging trails mostly) and had a blast with the kids but I am heading down to the Smokies (Bryson City, NC to be specific) for Spring Break with the family, and have done some research to figure out that the Hurrican Creek Road/Trail sounds like it would be a fun little ride off of I-40.

My first question is what do I need to know about the trail before I jump on it? I am going to be in my essentially stock 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. (The only major after market work I have done so far is to add the Garvin Adventure Rack System). Am I going to encounter any difficulties that would make it a tough ride for this Jeep novice that I should be aware of? So far, I'm not seeing anything that scares, and I have seen some pictures posted with other stock wranglers. But I want to make sure, and not get half way down the trail and encounter a problem I can't get out of.

Second, are there any other trails in the area folks would recommend?

Thanks for any info!

Let us know a specific date & I'll be glad to put a ride together & show you around Hurricane Creek. Its doable in any stock jeep, cj/yj/tj/jk. You'll have no problems if you just pay attention to the trail, you could end up stuck in some of the areas we "play" in. We like to start out around 9 am & then stop and eat lunch somewhere on the trail, usually were done around 2pm.

Check out some of our pics on the thread below, pics start on page 7.

Hurricane creek is a nice ride, just do not get off the trail! The local fish and wildlife folks are hitting people hard for getting off the trail.

I didn't see anything marking the trails. I went up a couple "side trails" that either came to a dead end or one where the road was washed out. I don't know if they were actually part of the trail but they definitely weren't the main trail.

yeah, if you have a forest service Vehicle Use map it makes it a bit easier to navigate, that high road that goes by the bus where the road was washed out is actually a driveway to the house on the left. The turn is before the bus.

And how would one go about getting a Forest Service Vehicle Use Map of the area?

I posted the generic page because I saw your location was IL, The road in this thread is in the Appalachian Ranger District

I won't forget the wildlife guy we ran into at the bottom and waiting for us at the top....driving a Expedition.

After giving us the once over someone asked, "Do you drive that Expedition up there?"

His reply was, "Oh no, I don't go up there, it would tear it up!"

During our first stop the discussion leaned toward, "Well, if they don't come up here, how do they catch people off trail?!?!?"
:lau gh:

First time up there I was on my KLR 650, It had been raining for days through the week and I got lost as Hell! Had a blast!
