Good shop or knowledgeable drivetrain guy - Sterling area?
I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that I need professional help. No, not that kind - although my ex would agree with that as well. Got this tap/knock in my 4-liter ('99 XJ, 82K miles) that is driving me apes**t, and need to know what it is so I can make an informed decision as to what to do with this beast. Can't seem to locate it with hose in ear but it's obvious from the driver's seat. Not the evap solenoid, not in the head, not in the dizzy, not fuel injectors. Under the hood it's loudest when you're standing by the passenger tire, but I just can't locate it. I suspect it may be the flexplate cracked where I can't see it or else something worse (rod bearing? Lifter? Piston skirt?) just need an experienced ear. I had Mike @ Fallon's look at it and he said it stopped making the noise when he got it on the lift and got his stethoscope out, but it's back now and not going away. Just take it back to him? (they do our company cars) or is there someone better that has more Jeep-specific knowledge?
I can't just ignore it... it'll drive me nuts and I need to be able to trust my machine. Thing runs great, but if I'm worried that it'll scatter something the next time I drive it it's useless to me.
Dammit, I want to do cool stuff to this thing, not mechanical repairs...
