Reaching out to Jeep mechanics in Central Illinois

I have a 1998 zj 4.0 that started overheating the other day. I thought it was just a thermostat, but the local shop said it's a head gasket and quotes me a $900 repair bill. I'm slightly suspicious of the shop for some reason, gut instinct.

If there are ANY jeep mechanics, or people can do this job near Charleston, Illinois I can pay some cash and food/beer.

Ideally just someone to come check it out and let me know what it really needs. This is my 3rd jeep and while i can repair some stuff, i dont want to get in over my head.

so any fellow jeepers in the area that could help out, let me know.

What are the symptoms of your Jeep overheating. Does it always do it? Is there water and foam in your oil? Are you loosing coolant and have to refill it?
