Illinois Mirror Law

Hello, this is taken from the Illinois Vehicle Codes.

(625 ILCS 5/12‑502) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑502)
Sec. 12‑502. Mirrors. Every motor vehicle, operated singly or when towing another vehicle, shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such motor vehicle.
(Source: P.A. 82‑122.)

For you Jeepers in Illinois, do you have to have a side mirror, or does the rearview mirror suffice?

Thank you!

You are all set. One rear view mirror.

Nice. Thank you for the info. I emailed the question answer guy on the website, hopefully he says the same. I will tell you if he says something different!

I got pulled over by a cop on Sunday driving my Jeep without the top or doors, and he didn't say anything about the missing side mirrors.

Does anyone know if this has changed? Should I just mount two mirrors on both sides and not worry about it?

Nothing has changed as far as I know, it's still fine to just have the rear view mirror and no side mirrors.

Oh, really? Awesome. I'll have to test the waters around my area.

Thanks!

Dont worry about the ILCS law in regards to mirrors. If I remember correctly there is a MCC law for those who live and drive in Chicago in regards to mirrors but again I really doubt you would get stopped for that.

Actually you have to have a mirror (side or rear) that allows you to see behind you....if you're towing something the blocks the rear view mirror, you'll need a side view mirror.

But basically just the rear view is enough.

I took the doors off of my XJ a few weekends ago, and only had tube doors on my two back rear doors. I drove from the city to Busse Woods on and off the highway, without any issue. Not sure if I got lucky or not. I guess I'll continue to press my luck.

Thanks!

You will see Jeeps all over the Chicago area with no mirrors. I just called a friend who is a state trooper and he called me back after looking up the law and no side mirrors are needed. He said you would need side mirrors if your view from the rear view mirror is blocked. So if you are pulling something then you will need side mirrors, but not just during normal driving.
