Elephant Butte

Friends and I are going on our annual trip to Elephant Butte in August. This is the first time I will have my jeep!! We spend a majority of time on the lake, like everyone else, but this time I want to try and hit a couple nearby trails. Nothing difficult as the jeep will be our primary transportation for 4 days. Any suggestions? Google suggests the Geronimo trail byway for scenery, but its paved the whole way.

I'm heading out there next weekend so defiantly keeping my eye in this thread.

Theres some good trails if you head south of elepant butte lake... take the road across the dam/spillway on the south end of caballo lake and there are several good off roading trails

Quick question:

Has any Jeeper attempted to cross the puddle formerly known as "Elephant Butte" lately?

I'd like to be the first...

;)

A few years ago I bet you could find a spot. The butte is no longer an island, but a peninsula. Kinda sad.
I grew up in this area and moved to Chicago in 97. Just moved back and living just south of Caballo now.

I'll be camping in Elephant Butte this week end any good places to wheel around there? I know we'll do Monticello Canyon for fun.

I don't know your skill level but there are roads all over the place to go explore. There's a sand hill between turtle back and TorC. Somewhere around damsite there's a trailhead that goes around the east side of turtle back. Palomas gap, there are some little shaftmines to go in. Apache gap. East of the garfield exit there all sorts of trails. They range from stock capable to extreme rock crawler.
Enjoy your camping and don't wheel alone.
I'll be out in the black range doing some camping myself. Cheers.

I'll check those out. My rig is capable enough just looking for a nice scenic route. Moderate would do.

Let me know the days. Need to take my jeep out for a run and some fun. Monticello is nice!
