Cibola/Magdalena Area Info

Planning a week long trip to the following areas of the Cibola National Forest:

Gallinas Mountains - Northwest of Magdalena
Bear Mountains - North of Magdalena
Magdalena Mountains - South of Magdalena
San Mateo Mountains - Southwest of Magdalena

Any New Mexico jeepers who have experience in these areas, please share information about good trails, scenic views and camping areas. Not interested in axle breaking trails hardcore, but am up for anything else. We are set up for expedition type exploring and can be on trails for several days at a time.

When in June are you going?

bearman512 05-08-2012 09:18 AM

22nd to the 24th I think.

I believe that we will be looking at the following weekend . . .

Have you been to this area before?

We are looking at Monticello Canyon and Chloride Creek west of Chloride.
FS Road 138 along the Mt. Withington wilderness area looks interesting as does FR 330.

There are a few canyons that have one way in/one way out roads such as Red Canyon and Bear Trap Canyon and Point of Rocks Canyon that have also caught my eye.

If you have recommendations of roads to drive, let me know.

Here is a link to a club newsletter with a writeup of a trip we did in that area:

This write-up was helpful to me. Some of the roads that were traveled by your group are roads we are interested in learning more about.

Glad that I could help.

Still planning to be in this area from June 30-July 6. I hope that they don't close the forests due to dry conditions and fires like they did last year. We have several routes planned including Datil Mountains, Bear Mountains, San Mateo Mountains, Black Range and into the eastern Gila NF. If anybody else is planning to be in this area at the same time and wants to share some scenery with us, let me know. We plan to camp everynight and ride every day and will move our teardrop trailer to three locations throughout the time we are going to be there.

It probably won't happen to be honest, but I would really love to go. If I can, you'll probably find out by a flurry of PMs the day before.
