Cannon AFB
Anybody know of any places near the base to go wheeling?

jeepin87 10-02-2011 03:41 PM

I just got here last week. My buddy said 100 miles south is an off road park. Have you found anyone else that wheels? I see a lot of Jeeps and 4x4s that are lifted and such but that doesn't mean much anymore.

Their are some good spots from what i have heard but everything is 2 hrs away. I would like to get a group together and go out on a trip somewhere.

After I find a place to live and get my front axle fixed, I'm down. I drive the white 98 grand cherokee lifted on 33s around here. Not sure of your location.

3rd SOS, RPA Sensor OP. I'm living at the Fairfield Inn haha. I went out to Melrose to look at a place, seems far out.

Yah im a ways out here but i like a little separation from the military when im not working. I do recommend portals military housing its nice and away from the base a bit. Whats up with your front axle?

jeepin87 10-04-2011 11:32 PM

I'm the same way, its nice to leave work at the front gate. I'm looking for houses in the country down by Portales tomorrow. I have to have a shop or big garage to store my crap and vehicles in. Too many hobbies.

My front axle is wasted, I'm not sure what the PO did but the gear oil is a black metallic water constancy and it growls like hell with the front driveshaft in. Plus its a 5.9 so I have CV joints in the axles instead of u-joints, weak. I want to do a HP30 from a cherokee but I'm not sure it'll clear the headers.

Know of any good junk yards around?

jeepin87 10-05-2011 12:21 AM

Found these guys earlier.

Well i found a place to get muddy but you have to go after it rains. If you go down Llano Estacado Blvd past lowes take your first left after the round about and their is a small area with some mud holes.

Did you get water in the axle? OR is the ring and pinion jacked up? I have a problem with something in the rear driveline of my jeep. I get ridiculous vibrations above 55mph but havent been able to track it down to any specific part yet tho.

As for junk yards their is not a whole lot here the only place i have seen is Eds recycling on prince st but they are not the pick and pull style your probably looking for but they do have some parts.

I see a lot of muddy trucks running around but I bet they are farmers or friends of such.

Its not from water damage. I honestly thing the housing is bent and I know the inner bearings are toast. When I connect the driveshaft the diff growls pretty badly, I know it's not the u-joints or T-case either. The PO did some dumb **** to it before I bought it so there is no telling what happened with it.

I registered on that NM website, there seems to be some good stuff around, just have to drive.

I just put an offer in on a nice house with a 54'x45' barn, concrete floor and 20 acres. If I end up with it I'll be putting in a two post lift. I have a lot of tools already, just need a place to work on junk.

How much of a lift do you have? Slip yoke eliminator? CV driveshaft? Do you have adj control arms in the rear?

WJon35s 10-07-2011 08:32 PM

6.5 rock krawler lift with CV DS on the front and rear with adj front and rear arms. Im probably going to go and have the shafts balanced soon to try and rule that out because this is the second TC i have had in it and its on its way out 2. Its either hast to be a jacked up DS or something in the rear axle

That sounds like a nice place your looking at where did u end up finding it at?

jeepin87 10-07-2011 08:41 PM

I had a bent front driveshaft once that did the same thing now that I think about it. Threw us for a while because we forgot that it turned all the time. Have you ruled out loose components, cracked or separated control arm mounts, maybe one of the tires is jacked. What TC do you have? I would like at some point to swap in a 231 for my 249.

Its south of the base and just a little west of Portales. The barn also has 220v, a bigger welder is in my future! The place is priced high but I put a fair offer in.

We ought to meet up soon. It was just @#&ing hailing on my show/race truck...I need a garage bad.

I see the politics are still at its best in Clovis...I was stationed there in '88. It seems Cannon finds its way off of the base closure list as fast as it makes it on there...have fun, be safe, and thank you for your service.

Appreciate it! It's not so bad here, I just got here so all I know is what it is now, not what it was. I've heard horror stories though. AFSOC is dumping money into this place. There are some newer restaurants and businesses in Clovis, I think AFSOC saved the base and the town from BRAC.

As long as I can wheel and drag race within a few hour drive I'll be ok.

The time now is 01:59 PM.
