Trails in Arizona?

we just bought a house in Wickenburg, about 1 hour northwest of pheonix. i was wondering what good trails there are in my area. what i am looking for is mostly rockier intermidiate trails that would require a modified vehicle. also, are there any off road parks or clubs in the area?

thanks
michael

wickenburg? id say the back road to crown king. thats a nice daytrip. and its a bit of a challenge at some points.
its up behind lake pleasant.

take castle hot springs road north. eventually it turns to a dirt road. keep following it back behind the lake. it forks out into cow creek road follow THAT until you see this rock:

follow the trail up the hill and this is where you end up!:

let me know when you want to go out. i just might join you.

ok thanks, how long of a trail is it?

Billy 02-21-2011 12:15 AM

its a ways. it depends how many people are in your group and their capabilities of course. it also depends on who is on the trail in front of you and how fast they are going. Most of this route is easy to moderate; however, there are a few difficult places that will challenge stock vehicles. The road has gotten worse over the years, especially the steepest part in the last four miles. Erosion has exposed more rocks and deep ruts have formed.

at a moderate pace, you could make it in about 5 hours maybe more.
its about a 46 mile trail from the carefree highway.

Have you been out to Box Canyon, just north of Wickenberg? You can go up thru most of Box Canyon and then follow the trails and eventually get to Stanton. Take 93 to Rincon Rd. Follow that until you get to the riverbed (the 2nd crossing, I believe).

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but what about over by Avondale?

Gunga 02-23-2011 02:12 PM

Not much over that way that I know of.

bipolar_god 02-23-2011 03:54 PM

Aw, well maybe some of us could plan a wheelin trip or something

Billy 02-24-2011 12:11 AM

yahhh in avondale, your pretty much reduced to driving up the 303 to peoria and taking lake pleasant pkwy to the carefree hwy. and just go play up in that area around the lake. :dunno:

That sucks :/

There are alot of trails around Wickenburg. Some friends and myself are going to box canyon on the Hassayampa next weekend. Trying to find an old trail up to Wagner.

A lot of good suggestions have been made already. Congrats on the new place :)
We have a book that covers Arizona trails, with 75 trails from all over the state. Most of the trails already mentioned are included, as well as many others in this book.

Have fun!
