Hey guys, sorry it's been a few months since we've done one of these. Now that the fire restrictions are finally lifted I figured we could have a campfire/roast by Utah Lake (before it gets too cold) like we've done in the past. C'mon out, bring your Jeep, something to cook on the fire, and some firewood. It'll be nice to see some of you who have been hiding out as well as some new faces.

Did they ever lift the firearm ban? Not that I'm planning on shooting at the bonfire or anything (it will be dark) I'm just curious.

The fire restrictions website said virtually all bans are lifted now.

The fire restrictions have been lifted. But the private property No Trespassing signs haven't. Neither have the firearms bans.

The top placemark is the entrance to the popular shooting area I've always known as Pelican Point. The lower left placemark is pretty close to where we had the last campfire outing.

The two big red boxes are now off limits and heavily patrolled by sheriff's department and BLM.

The yellow arrow points to a place BLM and the sheriff's deputies told me was still open to shooting. It's at mile marker 19. I mean, EXACTLY at mile marker 19. I suggest that location be used.

Thanks a lot for that Darrin. We'll go with your plan. If for some reason that spot doesn't work out we can always head out to little moab or 5-mile as a plan B.
I was curious if we could have a fire up Butterfield Canyon, but it doesn't sound like they allow them.

I'm a little confused.... so are the two big red boxes on the map private property and therefore off limits for fires, shooting, anything? Or are they BLM and just off limits to shooting?

I'm not sure about the shooting location at MM19, but if it's the little graded site just west of the highway, it's great for shooting but meh for fires. I'd rather do a fire up in the hills somewhere like we did before.

For the record, the Brian/Andy/John fire was way cooler than the other one

The BLM land only extends from the roadside to about 100 yards in. Beyond that has always been private property. The BLM land is closed to shooting, the private property is closed all together.

Then we'd probably better plan on Little Moab or 5 Mile Pass. The BLM LEO told me there was an open shooting area on the west side of the road a little further south than Pelican Point, but I couldn't figure out 100% where he was talking about. The only direction he could give was that it was out under the power lines.

With that vague of instructions, I'd rather plan on a definite site like LM or 5MP than a "maybe" that we're not 100% sure of. I really don't want to spoil Thanksgiving and/or Christmas with a huge BLM or trespassing fine...

Oh, and I will have about 1/2 a chord of firewood to bring. I just need someone with an axe or a splitting maul I can borrow. It's cut, just not split. 5 minutes with a good axe and I'll have it split. I used to heat my house in Minnesota with 12 chords of firewood a year. Splitting for me is as easy as breathing.

I'm okay with those options but I'd prefer whichever is closer. My hope was that we'd have at least enough light left to see what we're doing by the time we got the fire going.

the fire arms ban in the northern areas is unrelated to the fires. They closed it until they can investigate if its a safe area. the houses to the north keep reporting bullet holes showing up in their houses from dumb people shooting over the ridge.

Perhaps they should allow shooting throughout West Valley... Doubt anyone would complain about additional bullet holes. Just sayin!
