Power Steering Question

Got a question for you mechanics out there. My power steering pump was whining bad and my steering box was seeping fluid out near the rear seal so i decided it was time to replace both of them. At the same time i also put in a cooler and a filter inline. i believe i put the filter up too high since each time i would start the engine the pump would squeal for a few seconds and then go quiet almost like it had air in the system and then got to the fluid. At that point the steering was so so but the pump squealed during turning so i was certain it was starving for fluid. I removed the filter, hooked it back up normally, now it doesnt squeal on startup but has a low whine at all times. The fluid also came out dark brown so im thinking it burned or something. My power steering works but the wheel is very stiff almost like my front locker is always engaged type of feeling.

Anyway at this point im going to assume i killed my pump and will be replacing it, my question is that as far as the steering gear/box itself would it be possible i killed that as well? seems like the box wouldnt burn out like a pump would but im not a master mechanic.

Sounds like my Wj pump. I actually took mine to cleggs and had them do it cause I was sick of the whine. Just a little bit of bubbles really effects them.

Cleggs put in a reman pump and they tightened the bolt to tight so the whole pump cracked in half while on the freeway.. Ugh.. So I went back and they put in a second. This one whined a lot like yours and was stiff. Always a low whine and loud under load and start up. So they put in a third brand new one from another supplier and it worked great.

It might quiet up if you keep it full of fluid and drive it for a few days but if it continues to whine then the pump is toast...
