Whoa, whoa, whoa, you say you can't afford ownership of a vehicle that you own free and clear and you want to get this totally tricked out Jeep? 1+1 = 3?
I think what you meant to say is that you can't afford NOT to have a better Jeep!
How did I miss this post??
Matt, my XJ needs so much work. It needs a windshield before safety and emissions, it needs tires soon, the radiator needs swapped out. If I kept it I would paint it. The power locks need help, the driver's power window needs a new motor. There's several little wiring issues that I really should take care of. It needs a valve cover gasket and a couple vacuum lines replaced. It needs springs on all four corners. The shocks are original. The headliner needs attention.
The tabs are up on it at the end of August and the insurance on it is 3/4 of our total. In other words it's twice as expensive as my wife's Neon and our renter's insurance combined.
So if I can sell the XJ for $500 before the tabs are due and pick up the CJ-5 for $500, the tabs are cheaper, the insurance is 1/3 and it doesn't need a whole lot in the way of repairs or attention.
The only things the CJ-5 really need are the rockers rhino lined and eventually a set of tires. If I get picky about it, it could use a set of seat covers and the top could use being doused in Armor All for a few hours.
I'd have a much more capable offroad Jeep, cheaper insurance, no real repairs to speak of, and I'd have a hell of a lot more fun.
All I need to do now is find a buyer for the XJ that's not going to try and chew me down to $200 and hope like hell the CJ-5's owner was serious when he said he'd sell it for $500...
