I would go with the timing system esp if the chain/belt had never been changed. Some cars use oil pressure to tension the chain, they can leak and bypass or even clog if scheduled oil changes have not been performed.

I feel your pain I have two kids in daycare.

This is what I'm leaning towards, never pulled apart this side of the motor yet so why not.
