I normally just leave out of my house. I find it pointless to load everything up in the car to drive across town just to ride on a street. I have a few good loops mapped out from my house. 14 miles up 95 to the Indian reservation offramp, then a 24 mile loop up to the county gun range. That climb to the gun range is a killer every time, but it is worth it on the way down.
I really want to do Lee Canyon going down... too fat for the way up. A few years ago it was on the top 10 list for decent's in the US
davidson... craigslist. Curious, do you know what you're looking for or just in the beginning stages?
I'm in the beginning stages. Right now I'm thinking I might like a BMW G650 or Kawasaki Versys type ride. I would want something I could drive to work a couple of days a week and do some light trail duty. By light trail duty, I mean that I wouldn't be looking to ever get air born.
My step dad has a Suzuki V-Storm that he rides to work in DC most days and uses to explore backroads on the weekends. He has the 650 and he is a pretty good sized guy around 270ish and he said that thing gets up a goes pretty good for a 650. He said for the street riding that the upright position is way easier on the lower back then other bikes. After looking at Suzuki's website $8300 is not a bad price either, esp when you look at what some other bikes start out at.
ahhh, so something a little more on the street side of things with some dirt flavor rather then vice versa. I will say that BMW has a good rep for the street thing but they lack in the dirt sense and I'm not sure how well their crossover bike is.
If it was vice versa I'd say look at the Kawi KLR line or the Suzuki DRZ. The KLR is one of the number one selling bikes world wide and there's a company here in henderson that is manufacturing suspension components in house to turn the KLR from an over weight feeling sluggish handler into a ferrari on the dirt and street.
Have you looked into KTM? I won't lie, I'm biased towards them but they make amazing rides coming decked out with top quality parts stock and they have the street and dirt thing mastered in my opinion. Not sure what your budget is but they are definitely worth looking into!
