I figured the cost of a stroker would be outrageous. It's a shame, I saw one on here in the classifieds a few months back. It was in Ohio or something and he wanted like 2200 for it and offered to help with shipping. It was a 4.7 LB. I bet there are mounting kits that allow the use of the Chrysler 5.2 and 5.9 motors too. I would prefer those only because I'm way more familiar with them. Thanks for the info, garza! Also, I've never been in a situation where I felt I NEEDED more power in the TJ. I may feel like I want more , by never needed more. It's never bogged down so much where I felt like it was a required upgrade. Then again, I'm not ever doing any high rpm, high speed driving with it either. It's a crawler.

There's an avenger supercharger kit for 4.0 in classifieds now for 3k. Supposedly good for 100hp on 4.5 boost!

Those numbers sound a little high. Why don't you just get the performance lug nuts like I have?

There was a thread in TJ Tech the last couple days about a guy doing a Dodge 5.2 (318) swap. I think last I read, he ended up having changed his mind to go with the 5.9 (360) due to something about the PCM and lack of a Security Ignition Key or some such thing. Anyway, I have been thinking about a stroker for quite somet time now, but it looks like a 318 swap is waaaaay cheaper and simpler. I guess a few changes to the wiring harness or a ready-made one and motor mounts and you're almost in business.

I know everyone says they don't need or want more power, but on the highway going up a small rise with a headwind and mine is about topped at 60 mph. I would really like some more power. And I would prefer to have a somewhat stock engine for reliability's sake; which means no turbos, superchargers or strokers.

318 is a strong solid motor. You won't be disappointed. I put my first ZJ with the 318 through hell and it chewed up and spit out any thing I threw at it.

Or have you tried adding some speed holes?

Here is the link to that thread. The guy is having a few issues getting the computer sorted, but man, they make it sound like a walk in the park. I had a 97 Dodge Dakota. Might have been my favorite truck (non-Jeep vehicle) I've ever owned. Had the 318 with a Gibson exhaust, JBA headers, a big dorky chrome air cleaner anda K & N filter. The thing was pretty freakin' fast and I never had a problem with it. Seriously starting to think about this....

Pretty sure I could keep my entire drivetrain by the way they are making it sound... just need a PCM, a wiring harness and a 318.

So after 9 pages of discussion, that 5.2 swap still isn't working right? I think I'll stick with the stock setup that works. Adding power is great, but I've been there done that where you tinker and tinker just to get the thing to pass smog or run right or run at all. I'm totally over that crap! It isn't enjoyable anymore to have to spend countless hours working on something rather than driving it. If I had nothing but free time, I suppose it would be different, but I like being able to hop in, turn the key and drive away.

I'm off to pahrump Saturday to check out a rolled 97 zj. I may buy it, take what I want, then part or recycle the rest to recover my money. Anyone have a car hauler or trailer they would be willing to let me borrow? I will tow it with my f-150. I'll take the wife's car to check it out though. He won't give me a price and I'm not paying more then $500 for a rolled 15 yr old car.

If you buy it let me get the cat and some other parts from it. My ZJ won't pass smog and I think its because of the lack of a cat on mine. I got a lost of parts I could use as long as you don't rape me on prices

Good point. I guess it started out a little more optimistic. I would just like to be able to do 75 up the Apex/95-near-Corn-Creek-Road grade, etc. But, above all, I too need reliability and simplicity.

Magnum motors have been around for a long time. They are tried and true. The only thing you have to understand is how to make it work. It's not like you are working on a land rover that you know will break. My buddy had a D90 hard top with commando seating. It was a U.S. version with a Buick v-8 and it was in the shop all the time. the only thing that worked was the motor.

The I6 or the 318. Both are just as reliable. I would only worry about the power to the the trans with the v-8. It's got gobs of torque.
