Any cell phone geeks out there??? I've got an old school flippy type phone and don't really know jack about the smart phones and honestly don't really care much about them either cause for another $30 a month, I'm doing fine without that technology. But... My parents on the other hand... They travel 100% full time in an RV as retired people. Right now they have a regular cell phone flip style, then on top of that they pay for texting service and they also have an additional line which they use for their internet thru verizon and that's like an additional $50 for up to 5G. They never use that much as they only use internet for emailing and occasional research in the areas they're in. They don't do youtube, download music or anything like that.

So last night my Mom and I went to best buy thinking maybe if we combined to do one of those family type plans it would save us both a little money. Turns out it doesn't from what we can tell both being cellphone dumb people. The sales guy only knew what the back of the brochure told him so that didn't help much either.

My question though... Can't some of the new phones be used as an internet provider? Say if she switched to like sprint which has an unlimited data plan for a reasonable price. Don't they have phones that can act as a wifi spot so they could log on using their laptop thru the phone's wifi? And in that case they could ditch that $50/month 5G second line they've got for the internet hotspot thing?

Anybody know?

I know that newer smart phones can act as a hot spot but it is an add on your bill of like $30 a month. It may be a little cheaper to get a very basic phone plan then get a wireless hot spot plan and use a small laptop for Internet. I would shop around though.

Go to Best Buy Mobile, they are separate from Best Buy's big stores. They do not work on commission and are incredibly knowledgeable. They have always answered my questions.

Most of the new android phones can act as a hot spot. I use mine for this its a Verizon DROID bionic. I still have unlimited data through them.

Okay, that's what I thought but sales guy last night at best buy kept basically saying that for them to use internet on their laptop they still needed to get the hotspot and pay that extra service. So basically they "should" be able to get whatever phone is capable of this and then their bill should basically consist of the cell service, text (if not included) and then the typical $30 data plan and at that point if they get the correct phone it will work as the hot spot for them and they can skip that whole other package. I'm assuming they won't be able to use the phone to talk while acting as a hot spot though correct?

best buy mobile??? Is that an actual store front of sort or what? Separate from the typical best buy?

They have to be a newer 4G phone. And the hot spot is a add on its 30$ for Verizon. It can still get calls while in "hot spot" as long as it's in 4G.

Virgin mobile Beyond Talk, 35 bucks per month, unlimited data 300 talk minutes. Smart phones with android. http://www.virginmobileusa.com/cell-...talk-plans.jsp I have no idea how many "G's" they are but it's probably what I'm getting next.

The one catch with my parents situation is they're kind of leaning towards AT&T cause of their coverage in rural areas. They just bought a cabin in northern Minnesota which is where they'll spend their summers and I think AT&T is what they said most of the locals there have cause of coverage. Personally, I liked it better 10 years ago when cell phones were about a million times more basic!!! Almost scared to think what we're gonna have in another 10 years! LOL

You can hack most of the 3g android phones to use them as a hotspot.
