Truckhaven is near Salton Sea. Famous for the TDS Safari events.

Try going to cleghorn, it has some kind of hard lines you can take but nothing too hard. And if you want to keep going you can continue on 2n17x towards lake arrowhead for some harder stuff. You can get there in about 30min from corona

The best place I found that will give you maps and directions and lists most of the trails is dirtopia.com. I like to save the google maps links that way you can se how trails link together and you can plan out a route

Is your profile up to date?

If so, you'll want to avoid Johnson Valley/Hammers trails like the plague.

1) Get the Charles Wells book - Amazon.com: Guide to Southern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails (9780966497649): Charles A. Wells: Gateway

2) Pick a couple trails from the book; then down load the GPS waypoints - GPS Downloads : FunTreks Guidebooks

3) Look into a local club - California Association of 4WD Clubs, Inc. :: Clubs

I haven't run it, but there is a trail behind Irvine, called Holy Jim. It starts on Live Oak, just south of O'Neill Park. You need a Forest Adventure Pass ($30 from Big 5). I think that trail can lead to the top of Saddleback Mountain.

What's wrong with Big Bear in the winter?? I can't wait to do some snow wheeling. Snow and ice just make the trails more challenging...and fun.

I go to Holy Jim all the time with my friend and you don't need a Forest Adventure Pass. That's only if you're going to be parking your car there in the little lot at the end.

That being said, Holy Jim is pretty fun and easy. The main trail isn't extreme, but the side trails can get difficult. A good time to visit is after it rains (like it did recently) as there's huge puddles to drive through.

Another good trail is the Main Divide. This is the trail that eventually takes you to Santiago Peak, which is the tallest point in Orange County.

The Holy Jim side doesnt make it to the top, believe me. It narrows down so much that a motoxer ahead of me turned around, and I had to back up over a mile before I could turn around

The road to the top starts in the little town of silverado. It is closed during bad weather and maintenance though.
