MC 2100/2150 emissions CA

Hey guys, I bought 89 YJ November 2011. Came with a crappy Carter carb and smog paperwork from October 2011. I registered it using smog paperwork provided by the PO and ripped out the Carter.

My current setup still has the EGR valve and the charcoal canister intact. Everything else smog related other than 3 vacuum lines required to run has been removed. Jeep is nuttered, running MC2150 from the ebay guy along with team TFi ignition upgrade.

I have smog coming up this November and need to prepare. My plan was to go with a 4.0 head while if possible staying away from EFI. Have any of you guys passed the sniffer with MC2100/2150 in CA? If so, what about the visual?

I called a smog place and they said since MC2150 is an OEM part for another vehicle, they do not require carb numbers. Now in order to pass visual, they do however require all vacuum lines intact, sensors connected, nothing plugged off, etc.. I wonder if I can pass as is, if so, I would like to swap in the 4.0 head and stay with the MC2150. If not, I will need to go EFI along with the 4.0 head.

Passing visual with a Motorcraft carb really depends on the tech doing the inspection. If they know what an OEM 89 4.2L should look like, you'll fail visual. If they've never seen an 89 4.2L you could pass.

Don't personally know anyone who has passed the sniffer with a MC. I've heard that it is possible if the carb is well tuned and the engine is in good condition.

You can only install OEM parts that are specific to your vehicle, or CARB approved parts specific to your vehicle.

With that said here are your only smog legal options from where you stand:

-Original Carter BBD with the computer and all smog components present and functional
-Howell TBI (CA version)
-Mopar MPFI (CA version)
-Engine swap to the same model/year or a newer year from the same weight class. This has to be checked and approved by a smog referee.

Although the 4.0L head is not technically legal on the 4.2L (not OEM and not CARB approved) I doubt any smog tech would be able to tell. A junkyard 4.0 head swap/MPFI mod would not be legal unless approved by a smog referee. Don't know of any success along these lines. You'd need to contact a smog ref and see what would be allowed.

If you can't sneak that MC through smog inspection, looks like a Howell TBI or a full engine swap might be in your future.

Really appreciate the detailed information. Looks like I'll be looking for a donor XJ to get the 4.0 stuff... For the price of TBI, I can probably find a beat up XJ, get the stuff out, then part it out to get some money back..
