Kings's Canyon/Hume Lake - August 9th-11th

So I'm planning a bit of a weekend camping/wheeling/sightseeing trip for my girlfriend and I. I figured I'd start a thread to see if anyone would be interested in joining in though, since wheeling with buddies is always more fun than not.

Our plan (though you're more than welcome to come up for just Saturday) is to head up Friday AM and be in the area for around 9-10am, do the Boole Tree trail, setup camp at Princess Campground, hit up Boyden Caverns, then call it a day/night back to the campground. Cook out on the grill and whatever else the night allows.

Next day, Saturday, will be entirely an exploratory/wheeling/hiking day. There seems to be a lot of forest roads up there and I'd love to see what they have to offer. If any of you have wheeled up there before, your expertise would be awesome! Otherwise, we can Lewis and Clark it

Anyhow... this is sort of a loose plan so if you're interested feel free to raise your hand, or throw out any input in regards to what/where to wheel.

Also, if you're not familiar with the area.... this should allow you to get a bit fresh with it.

There's also Buck Rock look out and an area for 4 wheeling, the sign says lockers or LSD may be required. You can also camp at Big Meadows for free plus alot less ppl and less rules cause it's the national forest and not the park still within 25 min. of sightseeing.

Thanks for the info.! We've already booked two nights at Princess but will keep Big Meadows in mind for our next run. Is it located in King's Canyon?

Also, just and FYI. Our site allows for up to 6 people and 2 vehicles so if anyone wants to join us at Princess, you're welcome to share our site. First come, first serve naturally.

Yes, it's off Generals Hwy. on a map it's close to Quail Flats and Buck Rock. I'll let you know if I can make it as time gets closer. I've worked in that area for last 15 yrs. there's also a few to get into the park. I believe it's $30 or $40 for the year.

Good deal! As it is now, I'm looking at Park Ridge to Huckleberry to 14S02.

http://goo.gl/maps/oI1mX

On the map, there are 3 categories, black diamond being the most difficult, and they both fall under this. It's a total of roughly 4 miles of trails but the topography should give us some great views of the King's Canyon and Sequoia areas to the South. More specifically, it started with a quick jog off Hume Lake Rd. to 13S48, and a right onto 13S77, which turns into 13S77A (Huckleberry Rd.) and then into 14S02 which brings us back to 13S09 (10 Mile Rd, which runs into Hume Lake.)

I figure that'll get our feet wet and let us know what other sort of terrain we can look forward to in the area. I imagine their "Most Difficult" rating likely means 33s with an LSD recommended, whereas the easiest routes are probably reserved for any base 4wd. Would I be wise in assuming this?

Right on! Glad you enjoyed. King's Canyon is truly majestic. I prefer it over Yosemite Valley to be quite honest.

Some photos from when we went.

Early AM trail exploring by Hume Lake

Boole Tree

Lunch in Stump Meadow

King's River at Boyden Caverns

And I couldn't drive by this old gravity fed pump setup without gassing up there. Unfortunately it was hugely upcharged but meh, the novelty of it was worth the extra money I suppose.

Buck rock is good fun. We're headed this weekend up Highway 4 to Slickrock Road by Lake Alpine, so it's a bit North of Kings and Yosemite, but the same sort of terrain.
