Directions to behind the Lawrence Welk resort area please

There's an area behind the Lawrence Welk Resort just north of Escondido that is apparently good for introducing a newby to offroading.

Can someone please give me some specific turn-by-turn directions on where that is? I need to take someone up into a local area and that sounds like it'd be a good intro for them. Thanks!

Yep, great intro place.

Coming from San Diego, Take the 15N to Deer springs rd, merge right, Take the first left at the stop sign onto what I think is champagne, then go straight until you get to the gas station, and take a left, start up the hill, take the first left and follow that all the way to the top of the hill, there will be a unlocked gate at the top.

Thanks, I checked that out yesterday. West side of the I-15 right? It took a while of passing several locked No Trespassing and No Offroading posted gates before I came to the last one on the road with a big heavy unlocked gate with no signs on it. There's like a parking area in front of the gate overlooking I-15, is that the one you mean? Past a couple homes under construction?

Thanks!

Yep, as for the signs, we have been stopped by the cops a few times, but they just told us to keep an eye out for stolen cars, and illegal activity, then just said have a good time, so I guess its not to big of a deal.

Eric and I were up there last night.

The last gate has always been open, the other gates are for Fire dept access, the roads up those gates are graded for trucks. The other gate is a forestry gate that has been open for years. You can also access it from the other side of the mountain with no gates. There are three exits but I only use those two as the other looks like a private drive for a portion of it.
