I will second the fact that CHP will close the road before R3 restrictions are in place. Also, if you are towing a trailer you will need chains 4x4 or not.

i was up at kings canyon np and there was a sheriff there that said if we had the 4x4 were ok, just had to have chains in the vehicle, not specifically on. heck when i even got to the entrance they didnt even ask if i had chains OR snow tires, only if i had 4wd.
