Question Anyone in the CA high desert?

I'm in Yucca Valley (near 29 Palms/Joshua Tree) and need some help working on my 4x4 '87 XJ that I recently got. Really I just need to learn what things are and what they do, along with some troubleshooting. I'd like to clean it up more and actually be able to take it out on trails and trips, but it's been too unreliable to enjoy. I know how to turn a wrench but am not familiar with Jeeps, only 93-02 Camaros and Firebirds (the steering column is the same, but that doesn't help much).

Anybody nearby? I see a ton of Jeeps out here.

As well as me. I live in Apply Valley as well, but I don't think I can offer too much assistance. I'm still pretty new at things as well.
