Kaena Point Military/Native Hawaiian joint effort to clean
1 Attachment(s)

We wanted to send a friendly reminder for our Kaena Point Restoration Day this Saturday.

Date: April 28, 2012
Time: 8:30 am - 1:00 pm
Location: Kaena Point State Park Reserve, Mokuleia Section. We will meet at the parking lot at the end of the paved road at 8:30 AM. Please see the attached directions from Schofield Barracks to the Kaena Point State Park via Farrington Highway (# 930).

Plan: Our priority activity is the road delineation, which includes moving small rocks to line/mark the main and shoreline road alignments. We will start on the roads closest to the parking lot and work our way toward the point. People who don't/canít move rocks can pick up trash/marine debris along the shoreline.

What to bring: appropriate clothing (close toed shoes, long sleeves, long pants, gloves, hat, sunglasses, sun screen), water, snacks/lunch.
We will provide: coolers with cold water to refill bottles; plastic bags; gloves

Please share this information to everyone interested. Again, mahalo for volunteering and we look forward to seeing you all this Saturday!

OK...just got off the phone with US Army Garrison Native Hawaiian Liaison Officer who is driving the train for the military part of the area clean-up on behalf of Colonel Mulberry (Army-Hawaii Garrison Commander). Apparently Colonel Mulberry will have a meeting soon with the director of Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) to discuss placing a military ban on Kaena Point. This means that if any military are caught on Kaena Point the individual(s) can/will face military legal action if this ban goes into effect. My name and number has been passed to Colonel Mulberry to discuss Kaena Point before any decisions are made. I am also in contact with Mike at Hawaii 4x4 Association to coordinate a meeting among at least the COL, DLNR director, Mike and myself to ensure an informed decision is made (hopefully in the benefit of off-roaders).

Hey XJ, thanks for posting up. forgot to update this thread (on 7 forums).

Basically we hit a home run (sort of) in the eyes of the Army Hawaii Garrison Commander. A few individuals from the Kaena State Park division under DLNR are the ones who are actually wanting to ban Military personnel from Kaena Point. When the women from the State Parks division brought up the ban, another guy (former Army PAO and 26 year resident of Hawaii) asked targeted questions of the State Parks representatives in front of the Commander so that he could see it was a select few State Parks individuals who wanted to prevent military access to the point and wasn't a wide-spread demand to ban the point. AT that point the Commander stated he could not ban the military given he was looking right at non-military camping on Kaena Point (not allowed), with their vehicles parked right on the beach/water, with coolers that aren't allowed past 7pm at night and this was first thing in the morning with camping occurring overnight given they were still sleeping, hot fire pits still smoking. he said "I see the military personnel being the ones cleaning up the Point and not the other way around."

will see what happens. The meeting with the governor, DLNR, and the Commander was the end of last week.

Hey Everyone,

I am working on trying to get ALL of the Jeep community on Oahu together to help organize who is here and who isn't as well as for everyone to share information to help with those PCSing to the island...there are lots of considerations and requirements about bringing a Jeep to Oahu that has been modified to include Reconstruction Permit tags prior to passing vehicle safety for registration. Also, there are plenty of places to wheel but you have to know where they are. By doing what I am doing now, the goal is to get everyone linked up so that you dont have to recreate the wheel! :D
