Hey guys, I'm from California but will be out for a few days in June. Is it worth renting a jeep? I wheel in a TJ here and figure it would be pretty sweet to get a taste of jeeping in a different environment.

Its not no Moab or anything like that, but being unfamiliar has its disadvantages. Its up to you, I'm just saying we dont have anywhere to really wheel like how you guys do.

If you decide to get a jeep you can hit SouthPoint and check out the green sand beach, not hard wheeling but a nice ride. You can also hit "the Pit" out Kona side by the new airport, that would make some real wheeling on par with some of the mainland stuff.

OK, thanks! I'll have a look. I wouldnt want to do anything too ambitious because A) rentals are usually stock and B) I really dont want to get in too much trouble in a rig that isn't mine, could wind up being one expensive trip haha. Thanks for the info, I'll do some googling. I wasn't sure anyone would reply as I have heard locals aren't too fond of us tourists haha.

I've hosted quite a few fellow wheelers from the mainland, a few guys from Pirate as well. Most of them had a nice time being off the beaten "tourist" path. Some of the places we went you won't find in any guide. Shoot me a pm before you get here and I'll give you my number, if you got questions maybe I can help.
