Need some advise from WA

I am looking at a 2008 JK Rubicon that spent the first couple of years in WA than moved to OR. It looks like a fair amount of rust but I am not sure. Since I am from CA we do not have rust in our cars nor do we use salt on the roads. Just wondering if this is normal if this car spent a lot of time near the coast with the salt air. Also it looks like someone tried to do a poor undercoat job, is this normal or are they trying to hide something. The first pic is the E brake.

You may see the post other places just nor sure how many readers view this section. Thanks for any replys.

Good looking jeep I wouldn't buy it if you have any doubt about its condition though.

Who ever said less is more never owned a jeep.

Yea thats my concern a 2008 Rubi for $17,888 sounds a bit lowe, when being sold by a dealer.

I don't really know about the price, but if you try and lowball them and they come down on the price that is definitely a sign it has issues.

That's a dealer undercoating btw.. That's what they do to "seal" the frame (and hide issues like rust, etc).. and spray down the shocks, etc, in the process..

The rust on the ebrake handle like that, makes me wonder if it got caught in the rain w/ the top off a few times.. If you can, see if you can look under the carpet on the drivers or passenger floorboards.. That will show the internal rust situation too.

Have you car fax'd it? With East Coast storms all kinds of weird cars coming up used and moving across the country. That rust does not look like West coast normal... just sayin'

x2 on the carfax, the dealer should provide it. where's it at? my guess on the rust is someone drove it at ocean shores and never cleaned the saltwater off. normal driving around the sound has never caused rust on any of my jeeps.

Carfax is your best bet, but not foolproof. Watch for titles issued by Indiana, they do not require a vehicle inspection when applying for a title. It's an easy way to "launder" a title.
Don't be afraid of the undercoating issue by itself. Vehicles from eastern Washington/Idaho as well as coastal areas are often under coated

I don't see anything in your photos to be alarming, but I'm not on a big monitor. You can always take it to a shop of your choice for a pre purchase inspection if the dealer has any desire to really sell the Jeep

it "looks" ok but looks can be deceiving. Look "inside" the frame. That will show weather it truly has rust. WA DOT doesn't really use salt much anymore. They mostly use sand and de-icer. So rust from winter driving isn't too common here (except for a few areas). I am not sure about OR though.

Thanks for the replies but I bought another jeep over the weekend. The dealer would never answer a few of my questions, so I felt they were hiding something so I passed and got a 2005 rubicon.

I'm trying to see what Chrysler lot your at? I bought my '05 Rubi at Rairdon Chrysler/Jeep in Smokey Point and it had the same undercoating. So far I have needed to replace
the shocks and lower control arms...bushing were shot! Only had 41,000 miles on it and got it for $19,500. Steering is starting to wander and it looks like I'll be investing
in a high steering kit. Everything else seems to be alright. Good luck on your quest for a Jeep!

Most dealerships will use the same undercoating as a way to make it all look uniform to the average buyer. They don't know anything about Jeep suspension and things of that nature. We're working with a couple dealers here to start having us do their lifts so that people will at least get a good shock when they get their Jeeps instead of the cheapest shocks just to put it together so it will ride a ton better off the lot..

Lived in CA for years. You have salt air from the ocean all the way to the mountains. We here near the Pacific and the Puget Sound area get it too. While salt on the roads doesnt help, its nothing compared to the daily exposure to salt air.
Undercoats will help a little, but it hardly covers everything that can rust.

They dont store all those old planes in AZ for nothing..
