Colockum snow run 26 Feb 11

This was an invitational Forest Watch run in Eastern WA which meant a 150 mile drive just to the meet-up. It was worth it. We met up in the town of Kittitas which is the county seat, population 100? The goal was to run Colockum road from Kittitas to Winatchee. A distance of 50 miles each way. This is the last road in this area still open to wheeled vehicles during the winter. All the others have been turned into snowmobile snow parks. It was only not closed due to the efforts of the east side 4WD clubs. Sometimes our voices are heard! We had 10 rigs show up, half from the wet side, and the rest from the dry side. We wound up doing a 50 mile run (halfway) with 40 miles of that on the mountain in the snow. Thanks Clay for having a spare bed for me to crash on. The beer at the brewery was great too. The rest of the pics are here.

We aired down right where the snow was covering the entire road and where it started up the mountain. About 1160 ft Elev.

Our first stuck, right next to where I found the 4WD&SU mag Geostash a few years ago! About 2500 ft Elev.

Forest Watch founder and event organizer with his son Odo (Oh No).

Regroup at about 4000 ft Elev.

Pressing on

2nd, 3rd, 4th stuck and more. I think everyone had at least one yank, with half of us more than one.

Due to some minimilast road markings, we got into an area where we lost track of the road. We finally found it, and yes, this is where it heads into the woods down the other side of the mountain. About 5400 ft Elev.

Would we make it back up, that was the question, but here we go!

We called it quits at the halfway point here at the 25 mile mark. All these markers were at this junction.

I took a more adventurous route home going over White Pass instead of Snoqualmie Pass as I had on the way over. And boy was it! I wound up basically driving in a snow storm up over the mountain and for the next hour on Hwy 12 at 900ft Elev! A total of 80 miles in 4WD at 55 mph. My heart is still beating illregular 12 hours later! At least there was hardly any traffic at 0500 to 0830 when I made it home. This is a pic an hour from home after sunrise.
