Wont Start 1st Time

Hi All

My 3.1TD has developed a peculiar habit. I wait until the heater plug light goes out & when I try to start the engine it is dead (Absolutely nothing happens). However when I try for a second time, she fires up without any issues.

It has to be an electrical gremlin, but where? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Battery terminals are best place to start
Make sure the mating surface with battery poles is clean use fine sand paper if needed and that they are tight

Well done Tom! Checked & cleaned my battery terminals. Although they didn't seem bad, wow what a transformation! Many thanks for the tip

Well my problem returned again. I charged the battery for a couple of hours & noted she is taking a high charging current. Then had to pop out, but still temperamental. Wondering if its the battery dying. Any thoughts anyone? By the way terminals are clean with a liberal coating of copper ease on them.

Battery could be going bad.
Most auto shop's should be able to test battery free of charge.

Hopefully new battery will sort it.
I presume the battery went flat when it wasn't been use if so its not holding a charge and alternator is probably ok.
If volt gauge on display was close to 14 v when engine is running alternator should be good.

It's not that the battery is flat but when you turn the ignition nothing happens. The display lights on the heating controls go out as you turn the key, but there are no clicks or clunks from the solenoid, then after a few turns of the key she starts normally. Cleaning the terminals on the battery seemed to help & so did the copper paste. But now she is back to her original state.

The weather has been cold & is now wet.

Do you still have lights? Sounds like could be the starter. Those are so usually free to test at a parts store.

I did wonder about the starter, but usually you would expect to hear the solenoid click as you turn the key, but all you get is silence until it just starts.

^ true. Mine made a single click. May want to check/clean the connections to the starter at least. Mine had a lot of oily grease on it.

Good point especially with the amount of flood water I have been through recently.

There is a little clip on the top of the starter (should be the same for euro model) if that comes Unclipped, it won't click or anything when trying to start.
