WJ V8->I-6 front axle swap

so i've got a '00 WJ 4.0 with a bombed front axle. found a local guy parting out a 99 WJ 4.7. will the axle from his 4.7 WJ bolt up to my 4.0 WJ?? are the gear ratios any different?? or anything else for that matter?? i know i should do a better swap up to something like a d44 or a d60, but money is tight and this is more in my price range

Honestly I don't think there is an issue. Just make sure he has the same gears that you have in the rear

I'll elaborate a little on what these guys have already said...

There is a good chance you have 3.55 gears and the donor axle has 3.73. Be sure of what you have and then be sure of what the donor is. If it's all the same, go for it. If the gears are different, keep looking. You should be able to find a 3.55 D30 for next to nothing since it's not a highly sought after axle and untold numbers of WJ's left the factory with that combination.

The other thing you'll need to look at is the pinion yoke, which is based on what drive shaft you have in the front. If you have a u-joint at the diff, you'll probably be fine (but check the donor axle to verify). If you have a CV joint at the diff, you may need to swap pinion yokes (which when done correctly involves opening up the diff to set preload and whatnot), but it would probably be way easier/cheaper to just swap your front drive shaft entirely. You can find a used stock shaft to bolt up to whatever yoke/flange is at the t case, and the u joint at the diff that the donor axle most likely has. It's a very easily overcome problem, just something you'll want to be aware of.

2003 WJ in Jeep Green Metallic, 4.0/242/4.10's. 4" Teraflex springs w/ RE monotube shocks and IRO short arms, cheap intake w/ amsoil filter, 2.5" hi flow cat and back exhaust, lots of lights and other misc crap.
