WJ stock bumper tire carrier DIY

So, my spare takes up ALOT of room in my trunk, and we do ALOT of camping, so after seeing the threads of JCDRILLER and THISGUYHASADD2 on the same subject, i decided to try and throw one together for myself.

first off, my gas tank is already lifted about 7" making rear clearance not really an issue. plus fabbed rear bumpers are stupid expensive, but really worth it if you know what goes into it. i figure to have about $300 in this when it's all said and done. i'll put prices with everything as i go, and if i forget, just ask!!

basic idea is to have 2 pieces of 2x2 angle iron coming off the hitch with a 2x4 across it as a base in place of the foam backing that is already there. the bumper cover will fit back on over this, leaving only the hinge spindle and swing arm visible.

Go for it! I wonder if having the hinge on the driver's side and the wheel mounted more to the left would help with visibility.

a few differences....

the bottom of my spare will be about 2" above the bumper cover, that way it's at waist height. wouldn't want to have to bend over and pull a heavy *** spare off. my buddy's fabbing me a jerry can mount, i can't justify $120 for the one pictured above



ordered a JK tire mount plate off ebay. $20 shipped with studs.

hinge was $59.90 shipped, this included an extra $7 for a sleeve. i guess some people just weld the spindle straight to their base. not. strong. enough. pretty beefy. it's got 2 timken bearings in it that can be greased directly. 1000# weight rating. there was one with 1750# rating, but it was like $90, and i'm never gonna have more than a jerry and a spare on mine anyway.

was looking at de-sta-co latches, but the ones i wanted are crazy expensive, and they just don't seem all that sturdy (although many have assured me they are) but when i was at the steel yard getting my angle last week, my buddy stumbled across a bin of latches, inside which was this sweet, simple, HEAVY DUTY de-sta-co latch for $10. score. got a retainer pin to stick through just in case.

you pretty much lose your rearview regardless. i'm putting the spare as close to the hinge (on passenger side) as possible for weight distribution reasons, and the jerry holder in about the same spot as the other guy's

got the rear cut off even across so the 2x4 will sit flush, also got the hitch dropped. i left it with my buddy to notch/weld the angle to the hitch this week, so on friday i can pick up the 2x4 on the way over and we can do that up and maybe get it back on the dub!

oh, and the angle iron cost around $20. it was $.88/lb and we got 4 feet (2 ft each side) they charge you $5/cut, and the pieces were like 10' long, so we had to have em trim it. i'll have to do the same with the 2x4 bc we only need 5'. my tire mount will be on gussetted 2x2 square tubing.

sub'd... can't wait to see it finished up. My rear bumper is cracked in a couple places so I wouldn't mind trying this myself to see how it turns out

i know its kinda off topic, but where did you get your roof basket and how much did you give for it?

i think im the only person who still uses the guard on my angle grinder lol. Looks good, im jealous of the zerk fitting for your hinge, i will a bit more work to lube mine up. I think ill have mine mostly done this thursday, cutting the bumper cover is not my specialty

how far out did your angle iron stick out from the hitch? i dont want to have to break welds like someone i know can you give me some pics of the 2x4 welded in and the hinge weld? my hinge is a little bigger (1.75" on the sleeve) which doesnt give me alot of room to screw up on a 2x4

going to pick up the 2x4x3/16 on friday on the way to billyzj's house. (he's the one doin the welding/fab work) i googled linear foot weight of the 2x4, which turns out to be about 7 lbs/ft. at $.99/lbs at the yard with the $5 cut, i'm only looking at $40 for the main brace. should be smooth sailing from here. going to do the tire mount braces with 2x2x3/16 square tubing, which shouldn't cost much. a little extra plate for gussets and we're gooooood.

going to try and find a little clevis shackle mount for the latch to slide into. get it made on a long tab, and gusset it in and then have it come up through the bumper on the other side? i dunno, we'll see what the fab dude says

you can see where i marked for the retainer pin and then the 1/2" mount the bolt will slide into. the 2x4x3/16 for the base will be a 5' piece that we'll trim the ends off accordingly. saginaw steel quotes is at like 6.8# per linear foot, and the price is $.99/lbs, so i'm looking at about $40 after i pay the $5 cut fee to get a large piece cut down. i don't know the price on the 2x3x3/16 that we're using for the swing arm, but once again, saginaw quotes it at 5.6#/LF and i assume it'll be a few cents cheaper than the 2x4. 5' plus cut, and i'm lookin at about $30.

Thats so cheap, my 2x4 3/16" at 5' was about 48$
im getting screwed out of money
