So I guess this is my first write up of any sort. But here it goes…
I wanted an inverter in the Jeep for a number of reasons phone chargers, camping stuff, and just to have the option. So I read many of the write ups here on JF and decided to o my own.
First I bought this inverter from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-400-Watt...2526405&sr=8-1
I went to look for solid mounting locations in the Jeep but failed to find any. So I saw a couple of guys mounting CBs where the ashtray goes so I decided to put the power inverter in there but it didn’t fit. So I took it apart and voided the warranty.
I took out the faceplate of the ashtray

and let the girlfriend cut it out (trying to get her involved since she let me work on the Jeep even though I’m only home for 48 hours) here’s the picture.

Then I (secretly) cleaned up the hole and mounted the faceplate from the inverter in it. I used the left over screws that mounted the faceplate in the old inverter box to screw it into the ashtray cut out.
Here’s what it looked like

So then I ran wires from the battery around the engine and through where the fuses go through the firewall. I ran a couple of feet of 8 AWG wire with an 80 Amp inline fuse. I then crimped that wire to the 2in of 12 AWG that was soldered to the circuit board of the inverter.

So I put everything in back there along with the fan which is set up to help cool it. There are more fans online and I might order another one to help if it gets too hot.

Then I trimmed the ashtray door so that I could reattach it to cover up the inverter and keep the stock look. I will probably end up trimming a little more.

Here it is all together.

So that’s it hope you enjoyed it. I’m open to any comments, questions, and concerns. I have almost no background in wiring I had my dad look everything over along with a neighbor who has a restore CJ-7 that he did.

Under the driver's side rear seat perhaps? Use some 12 or 14ga wiring and mount a 2-outlet plug in the cargo area? My only concern would be cooling for the inverter.

this is exactly what I'll be doing soon. I may go with dual inverters, just in case. I'll have to upgrade the alternator for the lights anyway.

Please go into detail on the USB connection.
