There is a couple of jeep clubs in uk
the guys at birty dastards are friendly and steer you right. They often arrange days out and meet ups http://www.birtydastards.com
I'm in ireland and have the same heavy beast you have
Thanks for the responses guys. Texas & Ireland, two great off roading places. Funny how motoring articles dont rate the 3.1 engine but Jeep owners love it. I think the noise from it is amazing. As horny as Suzanna Hoff from the Bangles!
Ha ha. I too love the diesel noise and haven't owned a petrol in years !
The 3.1 is the unloved Gem and value for money. At time of launch it was eating into LR and other models market with list of lux options others only dreamed of.
Plus it was able to poach sales from range rover flag ship and boasting more mpg and power over the diesel at time.
All the extras did give a few more problems but these where mostly electrical
Mechanically they proved to be good.
There is one thing to watch is cooking the engine and cracking the heads. By ensuring your coolant system is working and regular oil changes and it server you well.
Tyre's are really important off road.
With bigger being better but you need to lift to get the most out of it.
Diesel models have stiffer springs than petrol and 1" taller so if your looking at lift kits bear this in mind.
You most likely have quadra trac II
So have open diff's
Dana 30 front has good locker option Detroit true track (LSD) or ARB air locker are good choices. Don't use a full time locker in front as it won't be drivable on road.
Dana 44A (HD) rear has very limited options with only two lunch box lockers
You'll need a transfer skid plate and recovery points for off road use.
Doing a diesel swap myself. Could one of you lucky diesels owners please post a picture of your instrument cluster or clocks as I believe you may call them?
I'm curious to see the differences between the diesel and petrol/ gas.
