WJ front axle shaft lengths
I have search through numerous threads and have struggled to find what I am looking for. I am sure as soon as I send this it will be plainly evident where this info is, but here goes anyway. I am looking for the tip-to-tip length of the driver and passenger front axle shafts from a WJ, both the quadradrive and quadratrac-II models. Does anyone have these measurements handy or shafts available for measurement? I am looking for the tip of splines (diff side) to the tip of threads (unit bearing nut side) for all 4 shafts. Any help would be great! Even if you only have one shaft or one style and can provide that measurement, please post up. Thanks so much!
Kevin.

So does anyone have spare shafts sitting around that they could measure for me? I sure would appreciate it. Thanks,
Kevin

Longboy,
that is perfect. I need the lengths for the non-qd and qd so if you have those handy and could measure them both (passenger and driver sides) tip to tip that would take care of the non-qds. Thanks so much. All I would need now are the qd axle shafts. Thanks!
Kevin.

Guess I misread your first post, I thought you were interested in Quadradrive and Quadratrac axles (not the open diff axles). I'll try to remember to measure when I get home tonight, the spares are in the garage.

Longboy,
thanks. I guess I should have been a little more descriptive. I am under the impression that the quadradrive axle shafts (varilock diff) are different lengths than the quadratrac II (open diff) shafts. Thanks so much for getting me those measurements.
So does anyone have a spare set of quadradrive shafts sitting around that they could measure for me? Thanks so much!
Kevin

Understood. I do think there are different lengths to the shafts, but I have the 242 Selec-Trac tcase (which also has open diffs). Sorry for any confusion-

FYI, I did find this on Napa's website. I don't know how accurate it is, so take it for what it's worth:
w/o Vari-Lok Progressive Front DSB Axle:
CV Driveshaft Compressed Length 25 5/16"
w/ Vari-Lok Progressive Front DSB Axle
CV Driveshaft Compressed Length 23 1/4"

Longboy,
I totally forgot about the 242 case. That is interesting from Napa. How do you compress a CV? Although the length seems correct... Let me know what yours turn out to be. Thanks again.

From my non-varilock front axles (tough to measure exactly with the joint in the middle, but these should be very close):
Left/short side:
40 1/8" end to end
Right/long side:
24 1/8" end to end

Longboy, thanks so much for these. Looking at the Napa page again, I still wonder how these can be compressed. Can you 'compress' the cv joint at all? Is there any 'slip yolk' nature to these? Again thanks so much.
So does anyone have a spare set of Varilock axle shafts sitting around they don't mind measuring for me? Thanks
Kevin

Honestly, I didn't try to compress these and I doubt you can. My guess is the "compressed" terminology is a carryover from CV driveshafts as there are no slipshafts on these axles. I didn't monkey around with them too much when I measured them since I was still in my work clothes and these axleshafts were filthy from when I pulled them a couple of years ago.
Hope they at least give you a baseline for length on non-varilock axles.

So, does anybody out there have a spare set of quadradrive axle shafts they could measure for me? Sure would appreciate it.

bump for an old thread. I'm also trying the find the axle shaft lenghts for the d30 varilock and open diff as well as the d44a varilock and open diff. I'm trying to track down some varilock axle shafts for trail spares but don't want to pick up the wrong ones.
