WJ 2002 Rear Main Seal Oil Leak

Before I start, I want to mention that the problem is with a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Limited (WJ) 4.7 V8 Quadra-Drive. I have searched through the forum and have not found anyone addressing this problem. Plenty of older and newer models with the "two-part" seal fix...but not anyone talking about it for the WJ.

Well my oil is leaking about 1 qt every 3,000 miles. I am 80% sure it is my rear main seal. I did a visual inspection of the valve cover but couldn't see anything. Anyway, I am just doing some research on what it will take to change out this seal. I am mechanically inclined and have done almost all the repairs on this Jeep myself.

So far I know it is a one piece seal. I talked to the service men at the dealer and he says you have to drop the transmission. They say anywhere between 6-8 hours.

So any advice, how-to's, experiences? Please tell me if this should be left to the pros or if you think I can do it myself?

Thanks,

Jose

you haven't found anything in this forum section because it's for XJ cherokees.

This forum is specific to WJ owners - you'll be able to find a better answer there:

From reading in here (XJ) I know if it is a one piece you have to drop the transmission.

All 1 piece rear main seals require separation of the engine & transmission.

Thanks Guys. Sounds like I should let a pro do it. I have 140,000 miles on it. I thought this was a WJ forum...Not XJ....not sure what you are talking about duckie564...

Has anyone tried doing it yourself?

Pulling the tranny on a WJ is not too hard, at least I think.

Just an update. I was going to do an oil change as well as inspect the underside of my Jeep to look for the leak. I wiped everything down as everything is wet...I noticed that the oil filter would develop droplets of oil! I researched that and found that it may be some O-rings from the oil filter adapter. I will do that this weekend.

If it's from that area, check the Oil Pressure Sending unit also. It's right above the oil filter and leaks like mad when it breaks. Ask me how I know.
