600 to 1000 is fine, I went 600 to 1500. All you will need to so it take a bit more time with the 1000. Switch the paper out after 2 min on the same side. Use lots of water.

Never mind, I just read that article on how to polish headlights and it makes more sense now. Looks like I will be picking up 800 grit though.

I went the route of 800 1000 1200 1500 2000 3000 mag wheel polish but I think im getting some scratches from the mag polish. I'm going to try it with a damp washcloth, and then a micro polish (Chemical Guys V38), and then seal them. Sealing them takes out a lot of scratches but the mag polish on a dry cloth is still adding to many. I'll report back later tonight.
