What does a bad bushing look like?

HI Guys,

I am combating DW. As part of my quest, I am removing the front CAs one at a time to inspect the bushings. What should I be looking for? I assume minor cracking is normal.

I have a front lower out right now and I am suspect of the axle bushing. I can move it easily with a screw driver through the bolt hole.

Depends on how many miles they have. Generally around 80k-100k they say the are usually worn out. Look for cracking or dry rotting and oblong holes.

most of them on the front CAs have some very minor cracking on the surface, found an upper ca bushing on the axle torn.

If you decide to replace the bushings, rockauto sells the entire control arm with bushings installed. I know when I was looking for my ZJ they were around $20.

Mine lowers do not look as bad as those. I did look at rockauto.com. I need the bushings that mount in the axle for the uppers. Has anyone replaced these before? If so, how did you get the old ones out and new ones in?

Nightmare of a job for me. Had the front end up on jackstands, and the axle hanging as low as possible. Not a lot of clearance in there. You will need some type of puller, to get the old bushings out. Mine were exceedingly tight. The passenger side came out without too much of a battle. Be carefull you don't crush the axle mount on that side. The driver side was one of the worst jobs I've done. I snapped two puller threaded rods. I ended up drilling out the rubber in the bushing surround, and pounding with a cold chisel. Some guys use an air hammer.

Nice, that looks fun. I will replace both the right and left while I am doing this. Where did you get your bushings and the puller?

Regular Mopar bushings, nothing exotic. Puller from Miller Special Tools. Occasionally, they turn up cheap on EBay. But a bit pricey, otherwise. I must say, it is the correct tool for the job. It's the one listed in the Mopar FSM. With several WJs to keep running, it will pay for itself.

As you can see in my image, top row center, it comes with the 'sleeve' that is used on the passenger side bushing. It prevents the two sides of the axle mount from pulling together, and deforming the bracket.

Correct. The Bushing Remover/Installer on ebay, and the Long Nut are good prices. You will still need to find the Long Bolt.

I wonder if I need to find that exact long bolt or hit a hardware store to find something compatible.
