Started to sand my new to me fender. From an 04 SE. It was blue and mine is black so it has to get painted. Should I sand down to bare metal? Or just down to the primer? I am planning to prime.

I'm no body work kind of a guy, but I have done some. I was always taught that 99% of the time, there is nothing adhered to metal better than the old paint. Unless there is a problem, you just want to knock the wax, dirt, etc., off the current paint, then paint over it.

I've done a lot of stuff on motorcycles and I don't ever go down to bare metal all over. A tip for getting a smooth finish: I like using different colored primers for the different layers of primer. Make sure they're compatible (same brand, composition etc) just different colors. That way, when you're sanding, if you see another color show through the primer, you can find imperfections easily.

Awesome thanks. How much primer should I put on? (layers wise). I have a little bit of dent popping, and a tiny bit of bondo to fill in a deep gouge. Then it should be ready for primer and paint. Pep boys should have the color, but if not ill get it from the dealer. Should only need less than two cans. Any brand preference for the primer and clear?

I really really like AutomotiveTouchup for all of my painting stuff. They carry Mopar paint colors in aerosol cans. I have no complaints with their primers or clears either. Also, getting one of these

Will greatly improve your painting experience, especially if you're set on using aerosol cans instead of a paint gun. My rule of thumb is primer sand repeat until it feels smooth then paint and w/d sand until it looks smooth. Then clear coat and w/d sand with 1000+ grit sandpaper until it's perfect. Of course, I'm not a professional so, take that for what it's worth
