All WJs with the V8 came with the D44A. If you are certain you have a D35 that would mean someone who owned the vehicle prior to you swapped it in place of the D44A for some reason.
I'd bet that if you look up the build sheet for your WJ you'll find that indeed it did ship with a 44a in the back. Most likely is that something failed in the original rear and a previous owner just installed a junkyard rearend with the same gear ratio. Perhaps they got a deal on a D35...
So we can all agree I have a 44a then? I think what confused me before was the location of the fill hole and type of plug. Some pictures have the fill lower down and show a threaded plug.
The entire center section (the "pumpkin" that houses the gears) of the 44a is made of aluminum. The cover is steel, as are the axle tubes. A 35 is all steel and cast iron.
