Vari-Lok or Trak-Lok---Do I Have it?

Hello:
I have a 1999 Grand Jeep Cherokee Vin 1J4GW58S4XC651974. The Front Axle is a Dana 30 (186Fb1) and the Rear Axle is a Dana 35C (198RBI). The Transfer case is the Select Trac NV242.
How can I tell if I have the Vari-Lok or Trak-Lok option? Note that I may not have the Lok options at all. I want to change the fluids in the axles with a 75-140 oil; however, if I have the Lok options I must add a Limited slip additive. If I don't have those options then I only add the Oil. Thanks in advance for the help.

Bruce

For sure you don't have either option in the front differential. Trac-Loc was not available for the front and for Vari-Loc to be there, you had to have Quadra-Drive with the NV247 TC.

For Vari-Loc rear, the 226RBA (Dana 44a) differential was needed. At best you would have Trac-Loc in the rear. I've read that if you jack up the rear axle so that both wheels are off the ground and rotate one wheel, then if the other rotates in the same direction, you have Trac-Loc.

Getting the build sheet would let you know for sure. Or, you could get one off the gear lubes that have the friction modifier in it already, Redline for example. Friction modifier in the lube used for an open differential will have no adverse effects.

Should have a tag on the diff cover that says to add a additive to the lube if it has a locker. It will be held on by on of the cover bolts, simular to the gear ratio tag.
