So I'm posting again some 2 years later and my tranny is having shifting problems again. I threw a P1762 code "governor pressure sensor" but the thing is when I first start it up after its been idle for a while, like after work , it up shifts fine. But when it down shifts it bangs into second at 5mph. Then it wont go into 1st gear. If I stop and shut it off for about 20-30min then its fins, normal shifting for the rest of the night no matter how many times i stop and start the jeep. Then the next morning it's back to the messed up shifting. The fluid level is good and the filter is about 15,000miles old.The speed sensor is about 20,000 miles old. It's odd to me that if it were the pressure sensor wouldn't i have the erratic shifting all the time? also the cel only came on 2 times over a 2 month period while this has been going on." heitzman" posted to check the wires to the sensor. What would i be looking for as far as the wires go? Where do they go? and are they easily replaced. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I just did the Governor Pressure Sensor and Governor Solenoid in my 42RE about 2 weeks ago. The Jeep would not start off in first gear, it was starting in second, and I got a P1756. 147,000 on the Jeep.
Easy job, drop the pan, remove the filter, unplug the 2 items, 4 bolts removes a bracket and the solenoid and sensor pull out. There's videos on youtube and other posts here.
I'm not saying this is your problem, but it fixed mine and it's been great since I did it.
The 2 parts were about $105, plus 6 qts of fluid and a filter, total about $150.
running down to see about getting these two parts, I never even thought about it being electrical in nature . ,,,,,yes yes Im aware its an electrically shifted tranmission but last month when this problem had started on I drained tranny r/r filter and saw a fairly big fur ball on the magnet , an v ery few, but some none the less of aluminum specs in the pan . [226500 miles on tranny] .so I started looking for a low mile tranny to buy and rebuild it ,is 300 bucks a decent price for the 42 re . [sorry going a lil south with this I know theirs another thread going on somewhere around here.]
This is what I bought. Currently shown at $125 or so. I got it at $105. Amazon prices go up and down all the time. I'm sure you can get these parts cheaper at other places also, but this is what I bought.
For the 99 year, the sensor is different. Go read up on it. I believe it would be this one:
