Wj Transfer Case Swap Help

First off I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 with 96,000 miles. My NP247 died today and with the help of my club and this forum I would like to swap in a NP242HD. I have seen and read the following thread but it is confusing. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/...d-swap-510546/ I read that the NP242HD has a aluminum tail cone and that output shaft is suppose to be 32 spline. Is there another way of telling that it is the right case and drive shaft? How long is the drive shaft suppose to be? I know it's 2 inches shorter but what is the actual length? Is there a model number on the transfer case? I want to make sure I do this right.

The transfer case will say either 242J, 242WJ, 242bla bla J lol, it really doesn't matter. I have seen the HD's and the standard 242's with the exact same tags. Just confirm that it came out of a WJ with a 4.7. All you can really do is look at it to see the 2.25" input shaft, aluminum tail cone, and that it says 242 on it. Also, just make sure the shaft fits into the tail cone. I don't remember the length of it, but if it fits into the tail cone, its the right one. 99 times out of 100, since these things are fairly rare, the shaft will be the one they pulled from the jeep they also pulled the case from. Buy from a reputable place like LKQ and you shouldn't have a problem. They also had the lowest price (by far) when I bought mine.

Well since someone already started a thread, I m looking into getting a 99 with full time tcase. I already did the swap on a ZJ with a 5.2 in it and had to split the 242 case and add the front half of the 249 case to get the output of the transmission to completely slide into the tcase. Will the same case i have swapped into the zj bolt right up to the 4.7 tranny in the WJ. I dont want to have to rip another tcase apart.

Thanks for the help. You guys walked me through the first swap and really appreciated it!!

I called LKQ for the parts and the guy got fed up with me when I was asking questions about the parts to make sure they are the right parts and hung up on me. Some customer service...

search www.car-parts.com. Depending on year, it will ask which engine and the 242 case. I would still verify the HD model from there when you call the wrecker lots.

I'm currently talking to one of the shops from car-parts.com. They are assuring me that it is coming out of a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.7L. They are taking out the rear drive shaft too. Is the 2.25" input shaft part of the transfer case? None of these places want to take a picture to prove it's the right part though.

Can I trust them is my question though. I have no recourse if they screw me.

They have a money back guarantee. I think it is 30 or 60 days. Maybe longer. They had everything I needed sitting up front just waiting for me to pick up. Everything was perfect. I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again, even though the closest one to me is 2.5 hours away.

Your talking about LKQ right? Does car-parts.com do this?

LKQ is a chain of salvage yards. car-part.com is a nationwide database of independent salvage yards that you would contact individually on your own if they have what you want. But I haven't seen any yard that will make you take something if you get there and it's not what you want. Even if they have to pull it for you, they'll just shelve it and go on. It happens every day.

I have to have the part shipped so I won't see it until it gets here. That's why I wanted them to take a picture so I can verify it's right.
