Question Transfer Case Fluid?

What kind of transfer case fluid should I put in my 2002 Jeep WJ. I've seen people use both ATF+4 and NV247. It's and automatic V8 by the way.

Thanks

It depends on which transfer case you have.....easy way to check is look at the bezel behind your shifter and see what it says....Quadra-drive and Quadra-trac take the NV247 fluid, Selectrac takes ATF4

I believe i have a Selec-Trac. Can this also take NV242 or just ATF+4?

Based on: http://www.wjjeeps.com/tcases.htm

NV247 uses special Mopar gear oil only. I just flushed mine a couple of weeks ago. 2 quarts ran $30 bucks from the stealership. I'm pretty sure the NV242 uses ATF though.

How many do you believe I should buy? I think most people get 2 quarts.

Two quarts is all I bought. Verify on the transfer case unit itself whether it is a 242 or 247.

I can confirm the nv242 uses atf+4 as i just did it less than a month ago with better shifting response and no issues. I used valvoline atf+4 full syn but any atf+4 will work

2 quarts if fine for the 247 for a drain and refill. The factory fill was ATF 4 until mid 99 so you can use it in a pinch, but really should have the dealer only stuff. ATF was found to cause chatter/binding. Mobil 424 is a suitable alternate, and some other hydraulic oils will work but you'll have to do your homework. For the cost of the proper stuff it's not really worth futzing around with alternates unless you can find the 424 somewhere in quarts; you could save a couple dollars. I can get it around here, but it's in a 20L pail... a lifetime supply.

I believe mine uses NV-242 not NV-247 though. I can't seem to find any NV-242 anywhere online. Is it possible for me to use NV-247 on a Selec-Trac?
Or should I go with an ATF+4?

I have a 2002 WJ Laredo V8

The select trac transfer case (242 is the model number) uses plain old ATF+4.

The Quadra-xx transfer case (247 model number) uses the 247 specific fluid from the dealership.

Can I use ATF+4 for a transfer case though? Isn't ATF+4 transmission fluid, or is it the same thing?

Would you mind giving a link to something I could use if possible.

Yes, that is what I and everyone else in this thread has said.

And ATF+4 is ATF+4. It doesn't matter at all what brand you use, its all the same. Just go to walmart or any auto parts store and grab the cheapest bottle that says ATF+4.

Yes and yes - ATF+3 is what the manual calls for but +4 replaced 3

I used Lucas oil in mine 195k and no problems
