Transfer Case - Confession & Question

OK, I've been bad. Very bad. I can honestly tell you that my NV247 has NEVER had it's fluid changed in 15 years / 260k miles. 4wd still works (low and progressive), but I do fully expect to pay the price when the time comes. Hopefully I'll beat the clock and get it replaced or rebuilt before it blows up.

Anyways, I tried to do a fluid change a couple weeks ago, but ran into a snag. The 10mm hex fit into the bottom plug, but not the top. I was tempted to knock it in with a hammer, but am worried about damaging it.

Is there any reason why a 10mm hex would fit into one but not the other plug?

Corrosion is the only thing I can think of

Agreed. Try scratching around in there with an awl or small screwdriver.

Unless I'm mistaken on mine the top fill plug is a square 3/8 plug. You can use your 3/8 ratchet with or without a extension to open it.

It *should* be a 10mm hex unless someone got to it before you with the wrong size. If it's stripped, you should be able to run an extractor tap into it.
