tranny isnt shifting out of first HELP

alrighttt well heres my story of what happened tonight

so i was a my buddies house and we decided to do a little off roading at the sand pit.. well started up the jeep and left to go to get gas while leave his driveway i went to pull out and it felt like it was sputtering and not getting enough fuel or something was clogged..we got to wawa and i got some gas then we started driving to the pit ..once again while i was pulling out it was acting like something was clogged then i started thinking my injector failed..
so i kept driving and we go to the pit found some snow ..drifted a little and did some donuts and it was driving completely normal

then we had our fun in the pit and i had no problems

but then when i got on the road it started to act up again
so i put the jeep to the floor hoping to clear some **** out

but that didnt work out too well
then my jeep decided "hey lets shake when you give me gas"
so that made me think it was my torque converter..
then i tried shifting my jeep manually listening to the rpms going from
1...2....D

then my jeep shifted perfect but i soon as i shifted into D she didnt go into overdrive and just stayed in a high rpm.. and wouldn't downshift so i drove to wawa shut her off and let her sit for a bit

15 mins later i decided to try to make it home
and found out my jeep didnt wanna go home

so while she was in drive she went into neutral while it said i was in drive

then i pulled over put her in park and then manually shifted again but this time when i went from 1st and then clicked to 2nd it stayed in first gear

as a result i had to drive all the way to my mechanic on the shoulder in first gear .. and it took foreverrrrr


DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT MY PROBLEM IS !!!!

you more than likely busted a snap ring. You more than likely need a rebuild or a junkyard tranny. Sorry to be the one to tell you this.

Did your check engine light go on? Are you getting a transmission code? Did it ever just go into limp mode, just keeping you in 3rd gear? How many miles on the transmission? While driving in first, did you try turning the key to off, put it in neutral, turn key on and put it in drive...and did it go into drive or stay in 1st gear? Before I had my transmission rebuilt, mine did some odd things.

my 04 did exactly same thing !!!!!!!!!! at 80k!

here's what I did and F.ed UP!
took valve body off cleaned it and but all back in . what I didn't see that I was missing check balls from valve body!
long story short, dont clean it ! dont rebuild it! if you can get cheap tranny get it! if not see if shot can replace sensors !

I end up getting rebuilt tranny from Arizona but I got wrong year! I guess shop didn't check vin !

after installing new tranny I had to order new valve body and sensors anyway for my 2004 .

if I had to do it again I would take it to dealer and it would be cheaper !

Go have your transmission rebuilt if u find its shot. Straight up its going to be about 2k give or take. If u order up a used one, that's what ur going to get and in time it will also explode. Find a good shop, with a good warranty. Better to reuse yours and put in new/ upgrade parts. Used may seem cheaper upfront at 1200 but then u pay freight, install, fluids and then u at same prices as just rebuilding yours. Unless ya know a used unit has been rebuilt, has 3 year warranty, etc..you may end up with another blown trans in about 10000 miles or less...maybe you will get lucky but luck doesn't seem to happen much these days to most folks.

Rebuild it man. Im doing my zj trail rig myself cause its a trail rig but when my wj gose shes getting rebuild at a shop. Ill have my trans dude do it so I know it wont be beep up.

rebuild it or find a used one. my tranny went out on me with no signs of it going out. thankfully my reverse went out and i still had all my foward gears. your problem is in your overdrive housing. (the rear part of the tranny) anyway my experience was i changed out my filter and and fluid and after i dropped my trans pan i noticed a pice of snap ring stuck to the magnet. so i knew mine was goin to go i just drove it til it broke. you can drop your pan and see if there are anything there thats not supposed to be there. also i drove mine for 6 months after i changed my filter and fluid.

ok guys i really appreciate all of your opinions... im going to have my shop look at it tomorrow and get an estimate on how much hes going to charge if its way too much im going to take it some place else and help the shop with rebuilding my tranny .. i think it would be a good project for me to learn since im only 18.. i put to much time into my jeep to let a tranny stop my build

probably the tps or vss. they dont know when to shift when either of these two sensors go bad.
