tow hooks good idea??

I had been thinking of installing front tow hooks. I looked at the frame behind the bumper where the tow hooks would bolt to (according to the tow hook kits) and it sure doesnt look very strong. I have an '02 grand cherokee limited.

Is this for sure a good location to install hooks to?

It is the location that the Jeep engineers designed and had built to handle the extra stresses of tow hook use, so it has to be good.

Where else, or how else, would you attach tow hooks ?

Factory tow hooks with the factory brackets are a great idea. If you are trying to mount the regular hooks that you can buy for cheap to the uniframe it is a bad idea. The brackets properly distribute the load, if you mount hooks with two bolts to the frame they will rip straight out

If strength is your issue, these should work for you.

They are rather pricey, but you hear nothing but good things about them.

They are way high priced. I made my own out of 1/4" steel with hooks for less than $25. It was $18 for both hooks.

Those do look nice and I've heard of people actually bending the stock brackets a bit, but that doesn't fix his concern. He's concerned with where they actually mount to on the frame. But as others have said the engineers designed the Jeep to handle loads there and I have yet to see anyone with issues on the frame side of the tow hooks. The stock mounting location works fine and if you are concerned with the integrity of the stock hooks and mounts that aftermarket option looks like it would work well. I've also seen several people speak highly of Rusty's tow hook solution.

Could you post pics? Have you ever used them yet?

I have only needed them 2 times and worked great. As you see I used grade 8 hardware. And they have 3 bolts on each side of the body.

These look like it will take a hell of alot to rip them off the frame. However I don't see that skinny little piece the hooks actually mount to holding up well, especially taking a hard pull from the side. They do look good though.

I would pay you to make these for me and it would still be cheaper than the price I have found them online! They look great and strong.
