Ok. Replaced the Teves with a nice new set of Akebono's. Complete brand new set apart from the attachment bolts which the supplier omitted to include. But hey, the old attachment bolts worked so on went the Akebono's. Then after a few weeks I get a clunking from the front left which I put down to a worn Tie rod which I have ordered. But

Out last night to test and the clunking gets worse, and when I brake it clunks on touching the pedal.

Off with the wheel, and to my amazement the top caliper attachment bolt has gone and the brake caliper is hanging on by the bottom bolt only and that one is loose.

Why would this be ? Is the attachment bolts from the Teves not the same as the Akebono's or did I just not tighten them enough and they have worked loose ?

Thanks

Brian
When I replaced my Callipers with Akebono full replacement Kit new bolts where included along with lock tight glue already on them. I can't remember the torque but it was high. It’s very common if these aren't torqued to spec and the locking glue isn't used that they will come lose.
It was just as well I got new bolts as I stripped the head off my old bolts removing them.

Brake Caliper Slide Pins (caliper-to-carrier): 53 ft-lbs
Brake Caliper Anchor Bolts (carrier-to-spindle): 76 ft-lbs

The FSM doesn't specifically require Loctite, but its a good idea.

The Akebono caliper and mounting bracket can be purchased from Napa.

I would still upgrade to Akebono. The wheel vibration and rotor warping happens because of the week design of the Teves caliper. The Akebono will make your truck feel like a different vehicle. Probably the best upgrade I did on my truck.

How do you know if you have a warped rotor? Also, if you're going to replace the Teves with Akebonos, should you also pop on new rotors while you're there?

You can reuse your rotors when going from Teves to Akebonos, if they arent warped or scored-up too bad. I re-used mine when swapping in my Akebonos a montha go, and my WJ breaks smooth and straight ever since. Remember to CLEAN the anchor bolts and holes and torque to the German torque spec "Gudenteite" if you don't have a torque wrench.

I was looking and there is an array of different mounting brackets and calipers. You could just go to the counter and ask. When I bought mine they had a complete kit for each side.

That is friggin hilarious!

Will the torque spec come with the new caliper installation instructions, or is there some tribal knowledge I need to dig up?

The front end will vibrate like crazy when braking.

I would change the rotors too. The are not very expensive. I actually used cross drilled slotted rotor, and they were $90.

I just ordered a set of Rotors/pads and calipers from Kolak for my wife's WJ, great price on the whole kit. I think I am going to paint the calipers Racing Red for the wife, what do you think?

You can use your fingers to get it Neisenteite, but you've gotta have a wrench to get it Gudenteite. Otherwise it's just not safe.

I replaced my calipers with an Akebonos kit a while back after the dreaded ceasing on - the heat generated melted the rubber seals!

Anyway, my pads will soon need replacing - are they the same as fitted to the post May 2002 WJ?
