my thoughts are
different rotors and different pads create different friction=pulls to one side or the other or wear different from one side to the other
as well as possibly one side catching more of the load over heating
just my theory

Back up again.

Ok. Replaced the Teves with a nice new set of Akebono's. Complete brand new set apart from the attachment bolts which the supplier omitted to include. But hey, the old attachment bolts worked so on went the Akebono's. Then after a few weeks I get a clunking from the front left which I put down to a worn Tie rod which I have ordered. But

Out last night to test and the clunking gets worse, and when I brake it clunks on touching the pedal.

Off with the wheel, and to my amazement the top caliper attachment bolt has gone and the brake caliper is hanging on by the bottom bolt only and that one is loose.

Why would this be ? Is the attachment bolts from the Teves not the same as the Akebono's or did I just not tighten them enough and they have worked loose ?

Thanks

Brian

Send Kolak a PM. He's a pretty popular parts guy on the forums and has good prices, and I'm actually getting ready to order the kit for my WJ. He should be able to hook you up with the kit.

I had the same thing happen with my 1990 Mustang when I converted it to 5 lug cobra brakes; Thread lock is you friend!!! If you used the old bolts & didn't apply new thread lock to it, the bolts will back out.

My passenger caliper came completely off & locked up in between the wheel & Disc..... ON THE FREEWAY @ 85MPH, Major suck!!!

I always Thread lock important bolts!

What is the main advantage of the Akebonos over the Teves? I think I have Teves calipers on my 2002 but I'll have to check when I return home this week.

I bought remanufactured calipers for my 04 GCL from Advance Auto and one was siver and the back of the caliper had Akebono in raised letters cast into it. The other caliper was black and did not have Akebono cast into it anywhere but had a series of numbers and letters cast on the back. Both calipers fit on the factory brackets and the pads for the Akebono calipers went on without a problem. Looks like there was a third type of caliper used that could replace the Akebono

Did you happen to take any pics of this mysterious third caliper?

I thought the akebono's became standard in 2002? I replaced my 2001s Teves with these to supposedly fix the warping issue. It did not.

IIRC May 2002 production is when the akebonos became standard on the WJ. Any 2002s before that likely had the teves in the front

The teves on the front were known to cause rotor warping and thus were replaced with the akebonos

Im new to the forum but if you dont mind me asking, the warping of the rotors, is that what could be causing an annoying squeaking sound?

the rotors can warp without any sqeaking or squealing. When do you hear the squeak? could be the wear indicator on the pads or a lack of anti-squeal compound.

I hear it on light braking but it gets pretty loud and annoying. Ive replaced the pads and had the rotors resurfaced about a year and a half ago but they continue to squeak. Just thought maybe the infamous warping was my problem
