Tcc help!

So, about a week ago I got a P0700 code, the generic tranny code. Went to a shop I trust to get it read and the guy said that it was a solenoid inside the transmission, called TCC or something... He said he wouldn't worry about it and it wouldn't do any harm. My theory is, it wouldn't be there if it didn't need it. Can anyone shed an light on this? If need be, I can go get the specific code again if this is too vague. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure. Torque converter not engaging.

I didn't get the specific code, but a mechanic I've known for years and is a family friend says the solenoid that engages the Torque Converter on the highway is going out. He also said the electronics are really expensive and I'd be smart to run it till it dies and get a low mileage tranny. That way I don't replace $500 worth of electronics then something else go out. What do y'all think?
