Ouch! It's great to see the world is united by common stealership prices. I hope they sort it out for you and cut you a break on the quote. You seem like a nice enough fellow.

Yea I hope they cut you a break because those prices are rediculous. I would have laughed outrageously at that email. Good luck pal

Need to refinance your house after that one? I'm in mine $2000 now and it's not even close to back together yet.
Here's my price list.
$280 Machine shop labor = $50 hot tank block , $130 for .030 over cylinders, $50 clean the crank, $50 press the new pistons onto the rods.
$845 for a bearing and gasket kit
$580 for heads
$200 for timing chain kit
$130 for OEM oil pump
I still need to buy some engine sealant, a water pump, thermostat, etc.
I'll be in mine for $2300 and that's me finding the best deals and doing all of the labor myself. These 4.7's are ridiculously expensive.
On a side note I don't know how much time you have on your hands, but I'd be willing to set up an ebay listing for the complete OEM timing chain kit at wholesale cost. Paypal me the funds and I'd ship it over to you for cost plus an extra $50.00. I could also pick up the cam covers at probably 1/3 that price. Would save you probably around $700.00-$800.00

Problem solved
Ok guys,
If anyone gets a tapping noise like on my video, its may be the cam chain guide, these have a plastic liner that the chain runs on and it is common for them to wear at about 160,000k's Mine has done 185,000 and the guide is stuffed which is causing the rattle, its sounds just like valve train but its not...
Just has a call from Jeep who are fixing it and they are 100% thats the problem
All up it has cost me $850AUD
Better than what i thought in the first place, and i didnt have to spend all weekend skinning my knuckels and swearing at the car.

I thought it sounded like multiple small exhaust leaks
Which will tend to go away or get quieter as the motor warms up and things expand

Awesome. Tons of money saved. I'm very Surprised that they didn't try to sell you the chain and tensioner with the guide. $2100 is a huge savings.

Hi,
I have a similar sound on my WJ since last Friday.
While driving in traffic I heard suddenly the noise and I turned off the radio. Then I noticed the engine is overheated so I shut it down. I opened the hood and saw the radiator hose was broken. So I ordered towing to home.
Last Saturday I replaced both radiator hoses and filled the cooling system with a coolant.
The engine has a rattle now. After warming up I can hear very similar sound as the one on youtube. The engine has no power while driving. When I increase rpm the noise is getting louder and even more "ticking". And additionally check engine light came on showing P0301 code.
I hope some of you guys can help me to solve this issue.

I have the EXACT same noise but from the other side, oh, and did i mention i have the same engine and model year. I'm at an engineering school and these guys seem to think it's the valve lifters that need to be adjusted. but i will try your solution first.

Is it just me or is there seemingly more and more issues popping up with the HO engine? I've heard of a few of the standard 4.7 with this issue but it seems as if it is starting to be more common with the HO.

I am sorry to say dude, but from what you have described it sounds like you have cooked your head / heads...
The Aliminium heads dont respond well to excessive heat and can seriously screw up if over heated. Your problem may be a serious one mate im sorry to say.

I would check the chain guide first, the lidters are hydraulic and are not adjustable so if it is a lifter they will need replacing not adjusting mate.
Hope ya pin it down

I know this thread is old but I have a 2000GC 4.7 with 150k mi. I am hearing a rattle right at the end of a gear before shifting. Usually just 1st and 2nd after it is already warm. Cold I don't hear it. I can also get the sound to be sustained if I put the automatic into second and let rpms get up around 2.5-4k rpms under no load. When I accelerate hard it only makes the sound right before the shifting. any ideas?

A) Use the search
B) If that nets you no results, make a thread.
Noises over the internet, even with Youtube etc, are a nightmare to diagnose.
If it is happening more on the over run, look at the timing chain tensioners/guides. No need to remove the cams to replace the lash adjusters neither, as someone incorrectly said earlier in the thread. As they say, there is a tool for that which I have in my shop.
Sounds like you are looking at a timing chain issue IMO.
Tesnioners can be replaced easy enough DIY with no special tools needed, regardless of what anyone says. I just did the upper tenioners myself a few weeks ago on a 4.7 WJ. Took @3hrs including refilling the coolant etc.
