Straight piped now! By accident..

I've had a leak in my exhaust for awhile now, and after running through some water, a huge chunk of rust fell off the muffler and left a gaping hole, so I went and bought a flowmaster 40, 2.5"ID with the offset, just like I've read on here that I needed. Got the extra pipe to fill the gap and everything along with some clamps (temporary, dont' worry) and brought it home. I broke out the sawzall and dropped the ol rusty can. I started to install the flowmaster just like the factory with the center up front and the offset in the back, but there was a big orange sticker that said "inlet" on the offset side. I figured the way the baffles are arranged in a flowmaster, that sticker was there for a reason. No big deal, I just flipped it around.

But here's the big problem: the pipe in the front coming off the cat was WAY too small. It looked like 2.5" OD according to the tape measure, but there was a good 1/4" of room between the pipe and the muffler inlet. The rear pipe fit just fine.

I had to leave everything laying on the garage floor and I'm gonna have to drive it on post tomorrow with no muffler. Dont get me wrong, it sounds pretty awesome, but I'm not sure the MPs will agree with me. Did I miss something here? Did I get the wrong muffler, or am I just an idiot?

Here's the one I got: http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/sh...e=&orig=842541

Many aftermarket mufflers are shorter than the factory. I added a section of pipe between my FM and my cat when I installed it.

I'm talking about the pipe diameter. the 2.5"OD pipe off the cat is way smaller than the 2.5"ID muffler inlet

I used a piece of straight tube connected to the pipe coming off the cat and clamped it. Then I welded that straight piece into the muffler. The clamp on the pipe after the cat seems to shrink the tube some.

I had an issue on the rear of my flowmaster where the rear pipe was too big to slip into the slip joint on the pipe. I think I ended up butt welding them together.

You didn't do anything wrong. The pipe between the cat and muffler is only 2.25" for some weird reason. You will need to get a 2.25 to 2.5 coupling and a piece of 2.5" of pipe from a muffler shop or parts store.
